“Tell me about a time you had to make a fast decision in a high?pressure situation without having all the information you wanted.” Unfortunately the candidate failed the interview, Why? what you think?
“During a night shift in my current job, I was the only technician on site when we experienced a critical cooling issue in Data Hall 3. I noticed that the supply air temperature for one of our high?density rows was rising much faster than normal. The inlet temperatures were already 6–7°C above baseline, and if the trend continued, several racks were at risk of hitting thermal shutdown thresholds.
My responsibility was to identify the cause quickly and restore cooling before any servers overheated. I checked the BMS dashboard and saw that one of the primary chilled?water valves wasn’t responding. I went to the mechanical room and confirmed that the actuator on that valve had failed.
I switched the affected racks to the secondary cooling loop using the standard procedure. After that, I attempted to restart the actuator controller, but it didn’t recover. I escalated to the on?call facilities technician, who arrived shortly after and replaced the faulty actuator. Once the new actuator was installed, the valve began functioning normally again.
After switching to the secondary loop, temperatures gradually returned to normal. The racks cooled down within about 15 minutes, and we avoided any server shutdowns. The facilities team completed the repair, and the cooling system was fully restored.”
